CITY OF ANGELS AND SIN

where do i even begin… maybe right from the start.

this was an epic 19 hour solo journey. the first time i went anywhere that far away on my own. i planned this months ahead in april. lets just say the plans twisted and changed around alot BUT turned out to be a wonderful experience in the end. i reunited with an ex-colleague/old friend, been 10 years since i last saw chris. and he let me bunk at his place so i made him hainanese chicken rice to return the favour (video demo of this is in edits as i type). totally bonded over music, dance and adrenaline with kenny and made some new friends along the way. i literally left my heart in LA and im lookin forward to my next trip back there.

first meal in k-town: delish kimchi soup and stewed beef. score!

the korean stewed beef was so meltingly tender

visited the MoCA to check out the Dennis Hopper Double Standard exhibition. tres impressed. that man Hopper had an excellent photographic eye.

made chicken rice FROM SCRATCH for chris in return for his excellent hospitality. was a success. video of the experience is underway.. x

on the road to vegas

we finally arrived in vegas.. not impressed at all. first of all, we arrived in the middle of summer. day time temperatures were 45 deg celcius!!! thats two times hotter than singapore! and its DRY DESERT HEAT. horrid. night time temperatures werent any better… it dropped to 40 deg celcius! still hotter than the hottest day in singapore. horrid horrid. makes me wanna stay INDOORS the whole time.

but to be fair, i might not like the vulgar explosion of malls and touristy sights, i did have most my fun in vegas! i went SKYDIVING! omg. video below. i also got myself a chopper ride to the gorgeous side of the Grand Canyon. the experience was a humbling one… love. i admired the Canyon against the backdrop of the setting sun.. the view was GORGEOUS. and for once in my life, i didnt feel the urge to share that moment with anyone… i simply took in the breathtaking view and enjoyed alone time :)

the view from my room at the brand new ARIA HOTEL at city centre. mad love x

with kenny and gillian at 8am. pickup for our skydive. kenny only had 45mins of sleep prior to this due to hardcore partying which i thankfully declined.

on the skydive pickup vehicle, we were made to watch a video on safety instructions. and this doode was presenting. i nearly died laughing..... and then soon after, i started fearing for my life.

too late for regrets now.. suiting up

met a coupla rockers on the way back to our hotel - cant tell from this photo but they were SWEATY AS HELL. gross.

treated myself to a solo luxury sunset helicopter ride to the grand canyon

the view was breathtaking.. i was so overwhelmed by the grandeur that i teared a lil.. i know.. damn drama right? i just felt like at that moment, my mundane worries were nothing.. i felt so small.

then we landed in the valley of the grand canyon for a lil champagne picnic!

my pilot and me :)

we flew back into the setting sun.. tres gorgeous

bird's eye view of the vegas strip at sunset... xxx

possibly the largest pastrami sandwich in the whole wide world, known as the Andy Warhol, from a cafe at the bellagio. madness. had to pack away the leftovers!

back in LA after a three night stay in Vegas. so before vegas, i met this guy, Luis, at a tequila bar. we got along pretty damn fine so i thought, hmm, id love to hang out with him before i head back to singapore. so we met up for a casual sunset “date” and drove to Santa Monica Pier. tres lovely…. :)

THE DAY I FIRED AN M-16

chào bạn!

im like totally enjoying saigon – the food, the lovely people (always smiling) and the overall vibe. the traffic “system” here, or the lack of it, never ceases to amaze me. the cars and bikes seem to have their own “government” on the roads. one needs ALOT OF GUTS when crossing the roads in saigon. the vehicles WONT STOP for you but they will slow down if they see that you’re determined on crossing. so just cross. you’d never get hit :) lovvit. its jaywalking galore. reiterates the one point that i believe: that rules are made for fools. the saigon traffic system, with hardly any traffic lights in sight, works perfectly well like clockwork; its gotta do with having loadsa respect for your fellow motorists and its all about “feeling” the situation. what i love most i guess is that sense of danger that triggers a slight rush of adrenaline before crossing and that huge sigh of relief when i make it safely to the other side. unfortunately a “system” like that would not work in singapore…

so today we drove 2 hours out of the city centre to the lil town of Cuchi, home of the famous Cuchi war tunnels (read about the tunnels HERE). this site is a MUST to visit if you ever pop by vietnam. the tunnels were structured brilliantly by the viet communist soldiers. a work of genius. we also got to shoot some viet bullets with the M-16.

(if you cant watch, click HERE)

then it was my turn to have a go…

(if you cant watch, click HERE)

then after squealing like the wusses, we ventured on.. and finally got to the actual tunnels. i nearly didnt wanna go through with it cuz i was mildly claustrophobic and the tunnels were like rabbit holes: pitch dark with only the weak glow of lamps at every 5 meter interval.. but soo egged me on… we had a choice between the one minute route and the ten minute route. no prizes for guessing which one i BEGGED to take. lol. after experiencing the tunnel first hand, i take my hats off to the resilient viet communist fighters who fought hard and smart to defend their land. watch our tunnel experience HERE.

VIETNAM DAY 1: SAIGON SUPPER

we arrived safely in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. it seems liberal for a communist country (cuz i think “north korea” whenever “communist” pops up) i see couples like full-on making out in the parks, keeping barely five meters apart from the couple next to them. on the surface, with the vegas billboards and neon signs, HCM looks just like any capitalist city and then we’d pass some buildings that flew the communist flag loud and proud… its a very odd clash. lil hints of french colonization in the architecture.. beautiful old world charm mashed with tacky modern architecture. the city is littered with coffee and ice-cream cafes.. like LOADS of them. schweeeet!

our hotel is pretty neat. apparently one of the newest in town. very cool modern interiors with imitation Barcelona chairs (its the thought that counts :P ) dotting the main lobby. we were situated on the very cool/central District One – walking distance to almost every touristy site… thanks to french colonization, we got the Notre Dame Cathedral right smack in the centre of HCMC! hahaha! (i missed seeing the notre dame when i was in paris so… SCORE!) we’re also right next to the Ben Thanh Central Market. decided to hop over for some viet supper. the whole street smells of fish sauce.. but street itself was impeccably clean! sweet surprise :)

you know how we always complain about how our local hawkers always stinge on the “liao” (liao = ingredients like meat/veg) in our fried noodles/rice? well.. apparently, the viets do things differently in saigon… :)

(if you cant watch, click HERE)

we asked for chilli and they served us cut albino ones. we doubted its fiery potential.. turns out, its as spicy as CHILLI PADI! omg.

our supper order... fried noodles with "mixed" ingredients. this was a huge-ass plate heaped to the max with sotong and greenery. can you spot the noodles anywhere? LOL!

the amount of squid we removed so that we can dig into our noodles... far out.

that wraps up Day One of our saigon adventure. sight-seeing tomorrow. will try to get some videos up. check back for daily updates xxx

SYDNEY

this is long overdue. my friends (you know who you are) have been bugging me… some even doubted i even went to sydney at all. anyway…

its in. AT LAST.

had a ball in sydney. very very short trip. was like a 2.5 day work-trip/holiday over the Good Friday weekend sponsored by CANON, Tourism New South Wales and Singapore Airlines. travelling with Peifen of YES 93.3FM was a ball! we totally bonded – love that girl to bitsss. also got to know Thomas Ong a lil better. omg ive had the biggest crush on him for the longest time. he’s a loada fun too. and with us was CANON’s pro photographer Jino and our uber cool guide Duglass. together us five, we rocked sydney. its really the people who make the holiday extra special.

from HUNDREDS of photos taken with 3 different CANON cameras (the Power Shot SX210, the S90 and the EOS 7D), i FINALLY managed to choose about 100 odd of my favs…. edited them… and uploaded them onto this mother entry. it was so darn tedious i tell you. i wish blogs would have a simple photo uploader function akin to that of facebook’s – one that allows a one-shot uploader with simple drag-and-pull style of arranging photo layout on blog. *sigh* a girl can only wish…

i also brought along my FISHEYE 2 LOMO cam for fun shots although loadsa frames were underexposed cuz my in-built flash decided to die on me at the most inopportune moments. so im missing precious shots of Tien and his lovely girlfriend Jaclyn and her bro Ben… who so kindly took Peifen and I around for some last minute sight-seeing and then drove us to the airport before rushing off to their evening Easter mass at church. BIG LOVE TO YOU THREE for being awesome companions – wish we had more time to hang!

DAY 1: SYDNEY FISH MARKET

DAY 1: BONDI BEACH

after the beach, we headed to The Rockies where we took embarked on a little photography journey with our power “guns”… i toyed around with the EOS 7D. *love* im considering to get that… but it was a tad heavy. decisions decisions… my bro is using a Nikon. if i get a Nikon, we can share lens – makes more economic sense. BUT the 7D looks so good on me…

later that night, i met up with an old friend of mine, Calista. we knew each other when we were teenagers! now she’s a doctor based in sydney and she just got engaged too! cause for celebration EXCEPT THAT its good friday night. there’s a blanket ban on alcohol after 10pm. bollocks. we met at the Hyatt’s Marble Bar just a little before 10pm. avneesh came along too. we managed to squeeze a drink out of the bartender who then told us that we can forget about drinks anywhere across sydney after we get done :(

then a friend of Cali’s, this korean doctor friend of hers… Leo suggested that we check out Little Korea near Chinatown. cuz apparently the koreans love breakin rules. so desperate us trudged towards our Plan B. we literally went a-knockin from restaurant to restaurant until we found this one… we sent Leo in to test waters:

Leo (in aussie-accented korean): do you serve alcohol?

Korean restaurant owner: no no we dont.

(pause)

Korean restaurant owner:… are you korean?

HAHAHAHA! on that cue, we all rushed in like happy fools and ordered Shochu pronto! they got served in plastic water flasks. hilarious: undercover alk. noiiice.

my kimchi bowl. one of the best ive ever had honestly xxx

callie and me xxx

DAY 2: BOURKE STREET BAKERY
the pies, pastries and tarts here are LEGENDARY. we arrived for breakfast at 9am and there was already a queue!!! had the yummiest ham-cheese-bacon croissant-toastie. and a buffet of tarts and muffins followed! the lovely bakery owner even gifted me a hard-cover copy of the Bourke Street Bakery cookbook so that i can recreate the recipes! im sharing the book with Peifen cuz she actually bakes. (im only after the savoury recipes in there)

DAY 2: SURRY HILLS + PADDINGTON MARKET

DAY 2: YACHT RIDE AROUND SYDNEY HARBOUR

DAY 2: THE IVY – COOLEST CLUB IN SYDNEY

DAY 2: SEAFOOD DINNER AT CIRCULAR QUAY
to be honest, its alot like Boat Quay: touristy. not my scene at all. food wasnt fab too. hello, i hail from chilli crab land, you cannot trick me into believing that steamed/boiled lobsters are seafood nirvana. cant be lorrr!!! LOL! anyway since we had to go there, might as well have fun and make the best of it right? so… we started playing with our food.

DAY 2: DRINKS @ ZETA BAR (HYATT HOTEL)
thank goodness we were rolling with the tourism board people… else we gotta queue up to get into the club! we were well taken care of – VIP style. had a pretty neat table with the mixologist personally serving us our night’s poisons… then left the club and headed down to the basement bar for some live music.. man. the band there, RADIO CITY CATS, was AWESOME! i fell in love with the drummer… perfect guy. xxx

DAY 3: BREAKFAST @ BONDI BEACH + HARLEY TOUR
i love bondi beach. cool lil community. visited the bath house (nostalgia) again…. hopped onto harley davidson for a bike tour too! it was my first time ever riding a harley and boy that beast was smooooth and sexaaay! rounded up the afternoon with a visit to Bondi FM where i met the coolest chick/owner/DJ Nat Ayres. its bondi beach’s very own radio station cum cafe joint. open decks. anyone can spin. really wicked concept. we still keep in touch :)

i miss sydney already. sigh…

anyway i’ll be exhibiting my travel photos and sharing travel photography tips with Peifen and Thomas and Jino at the CANON Power In Your Hands Seminar. happening SATURDAY 15th MAY @ Suntec Ballroom 3. registration fee only costs you $10. sign up and you’ll stand a chance to win a travel voucher worht $500 courtesy of Dynasty Travels. to register, email: radiopromo@mediacorp.com.sg

hope to see you there! *yawn* its 140am. going to bed now…. xxx

BINTAN STIMM!

there’s nothing i love more in the world than spending a relaxed weekend with the ones i love. and cuz i love a lil spur of the moment adventure every now and then, i rounded up the crew for a spa day-trip in Bintan.

suggested bintan plan:

  • take the 1110am ferry to Bintan and get there in time for lunch. (ferry ride is 50mins. Bintan is 1Hour behind singapore.) adult RETURN ferry tickets cost abt $65 per person inclusive of tax.
  • Chill on the beach. the BEST BEACH is at Mayang Sari. white powdery sand, clear skies and clear bluish green sea.
  • Booked us into KEDATON SPA at 230pm. a 2.5hr spa package (scrub, wrap and 1hr massage = $150nett)
  • Dinner at BAAN AARYA Thai Restaurant. Awesome sunset view. get there for 530pm to catch the sunset. dinner cost $44 per person. and we had a HUGE FEAST.
  • catch the last ferry back. we went on a sunday so last ferry for weekends is at 815pm :)

was such a good day trip. came back rejuvenated and ready for the work week ahead. total damage: approx $250 per person. peanuts, considering i’d spend double that amount on shopping in a day on orchard road.

TOTALLY RECOMMEND YOU GIVE THIS DAY TRIP A SHOT :)

standing outside our lunch venue: RIN Japanese Restaurant at Nirwana Resort

the reason we're in bintan: to be parked at the KEDATON SPA for hours.... *bliss*

checkin out the private massage villas. L-R: wykidd, steph, ryan, anders, jillian

lomo-ing at the spa courtyard

gorgeous sandy beach, clear blue sea and sky. macam maldives. who wouldve thought a paradise exists only 50mins away from singapore?

gorgeous sunset

then we decided to do jump shots. jump until sweat like mad. so after about 100 jumps or so between us, here’s our best shots.

my best split jump, pathetic.... really rusty from all the years of not dancing

steph doing the streetfighter twirl

ryan was the best jumper amongst the 3 of us

steph was wearing harem pants.

ryan and steph. obviously in love.

my sunny crotch. nice.

grabbing the setting sun by the balls.

ryan... dramatic much?

yes. ryan has magical powers.

random husk we spied on the grass. ashtray. thanks.

anders and jillian joined after their lil after-spa coffee at some cafe. so they didnt get to do sunset jumps.

wykidd's too old to be doing any sort of jumps LOL. plus he was watching tennis anyway.

my bro and i :)

the next time i day-trip off to bintan, i’d go the more action-packed route.. jet-skiing, banana-boating, ATV rides… beers and pizzas on the beach. and of course, i will take loadsa photos :)

SET ADRIFT ON TOKYO BLISS

tokyo. ive always wanted to visit tokyo but never quite gotten round to it cuz i was distracted by romantic europe, nouveau australia, exotic africa and trashy south east asia.

so tokyo. at long last.

however what started out as an intended romantic getaway with the man i wanted to spend my life with, slowly degenerated into a trip that i dreaded.

we booked the trip months in advance. was some cheap deal on zuji. that locked-jaw typa deal that allowed no refunds. the you-can-be-diagnosed-with-terminal-cancer-and-they-still-wont-refund-you-your-money type of deal. we thought we were good. spent many a night doing research on the net for things to do/see in tokyo. we were psyched.

then, we broke up. or rather, he broke up with me. “we dont fit”, he said.

time check: one month to tokyo trip. i was broken, in every way humanly possible.

there should be a law somewhere that limits grief. a rule book that says its alright to wake up sobbing like a wreck, but only for a week. that after one month you will no longer feel this twist in your guts and rapid heartbeats when you think of him. there will be no fine imposed if you throw away all things that remind you of him cuz it cuts you fresh again to see it. that it is okay to measure the time he’s gone, the same way we once measured the time we had been together.

twas a black november for me.

then i decided okay. he’s not coming with me, he’s lost out. my ticket was still valid. i decided that i’d be a brave padawan and explore tokyo on my own.

however friends, when they heard of my decision, insisted that i’d feel lousy if i embarked on a solo journey fresh from a broken heart. and one particular sweetheart, Rico, started to flex his PR muscles and rounded up all his friends in tokyo to take care of me. sharon au, who’s in tokyo studying now, was sucha sweetheart too: started to plan an itinery for me. i started to feel a little excited. and blessed to have such lovely, strong support.

icing on the cake: i asked the ex for monetary compensation and he agreed. (i mean HELLO, YOU dont wanna go to tokyo, i for sure shouldnt be made to go alone right?) so with the mooolah in hand, i bought TWO airtickets for a friend and my bro’s girlfriend STEPH. along they came as my travel buddies :)

when we got to tokyo, sharon was the first to meet us. took us out to a nice traditional japanese foodhouse. she’s such a darling la. also met up with cyril takayama and his lovely wife jane who took us out to nice jap bbq dinner. made alot of fab new friends along the way:

(L-R): Me, Sharon, Steph. Sharon was such an amazing tokyo guide (she speaks fluent jap), confidante and girlfriend.

(L-R): two fab acadamy dancers, Kike and Brad.

LOVELY PEOPLE. Brad+Kike own a dance studio called the FAB ACADEMY and we bought Moet after dinner and raided the dance studio. did hoops, burlesque dancing and had waaaay too much fun.

Cyril and me @ this kickass jap bbq restaurant on roppongi. catch Cyril on AXN’s Simply Magic (yours truly also innit)

that’s jason, an amazing dancer with the australian ballet. and next to him, cyril’s lovely wife jane. who’s also a freakin amazing dancer. jane’s a riot! x

thats me trying RAW COW’S LIVER!!! innards, raw or not, is really not my thing lor. but cyril kept pushing me to try and what the heck, im on a holiday so i went for it.  it was surprisingly delisssssh i must say! sweet meat. not slimy at all! of course it was heavily seasoned but who cares. it was yum!

conquering harajuku. thats me on the left. and lil bit of my friend zach on the right.

steph and i and our fav okasan who made our dinner at her restaurant such a heartwarming one. we cant remember name of restaurant but it was on kabuki-cho in shinjuku. most def heading back to visit her. x

darling steph and i at the top of Mori Tower with breathtakin view of tokyo tower and city behind us.

2 travel buddies.

6 days in tokyo.

7 new friends.

1 broken heart, healed.

when life gives you lemons, you bloddy hell turn them into lemonade yo! when life f*&ks u up, you grab f*&k by the balls and tell it to piss off. all things happen for a reason. one door closes another one opens. blah blah. all so true.

tokyo, thank you for giving me clarity, confidence and peace of mind. i left my heart with you. i will be returning, wait for me.

p/s: i will be uploading an entire album of photos taken of my trip to tokyo, on the shanrozz facebook page. if you havnt hooked up as our friend, log on to www.987fm.sg and click on my DJ profile pic and there you’d see a link to add us on facebook. xoxo
