when i was about 8 years old, i used to play-pretend that i was wearing high heels by fastening a few Lego bricks onto my bare heels with double-sided tape. i’d then click-clack around the house pretending to be like my momma.
when i was 12, in the privacy of my bedroom, i stuffed large mounds of tissue paper into my singlet to see what i’d look like once I had badangdangs. (little did i know back then that “once” would never arrive LOL)
fast forward to present times and what do we have on the shelves now? padded bikinis for 7 year olds!!! i was mortified.
okay so ive snuck into my mom’s room and tried on her heels, clothes and lipstick… cuz as a little girl, i wanted to emulate my biggest female role model (mom) and experiment with what will happen in the future. but you see, that was strictly ‘dressing up’ and my childhood was mercifully free from hannah montana, over-sexualised Bratz dolls…. the Bratz franchise included slutty clothes for little girls….

tween modelling BRATZ line of clothes for little girls... tell me she doesnt look like a phone sex operator. serrriousssly.
the little girls of my time had a party outfit, which we were allowed to wear with a little smack of lipstick on, that was saved for special occasions. today’s little girls, it seems, have an entire wardrobe of clothes more suited to a hooker than a child!!!
i remember i used to get really turned off whenever i watched those kiddy talent shows on channel 8. under-dressed little girls, gyrating sexily to techno versions of kiddy songs and wearing too much makeup. here’s a perfect example i found on youtube. i mean no disrespect to the little kiddo who was prob rehearsed to the bone for this dance number. but seriously, i felt sick just watching it.

and heres another one… thanks Gen for sharing the link:

tell me how wont those videos add fuel to the sick desires of paedophiles???!!!
how can mothers fail to realise the consequences of dressing (or undressing, in this case) their young daughters in slutty clothes that robs them of their innocence and shortens their childhoods, and signing them up for beauty/”talent” contests that could prematurely fuel their insecurities about body image?
there is no denying that the boundaries between adulthood and childhood have become dangerously blurred and that many clothes on sale to young girls are downright inappropriate.
we live in a screwed up world where old women are desperate to look like girls….
while girls crave to look like adult women…
you might say: ‘lighten up, it’s all harmless fun.’ BUT IS IT?
no. it isnt. the way i see it is: if you sexualise kids and teach them to behave sexually, it almost gives license to the people who want to abuse them.
i wish parents would dress their daughters as the little girls they are, and let them have the childhood they deserve and that the clothes they wear and color of their lip gloss should be way down their list of priorities………. but only until they are old enough to decide for themselves of course – cuz Rozz without makeup is too horrible a sight to behold and even i dont wish that fate on my worst enemies.

RYAN LEE
both the ahma and the young lady are CREEPY!
PS: cant wait for 4pm
yes ross, i totally agree with you! children should be given the chance to have the childhood they deserve, dressed as the little kids they are..
however, its sad the way the world is progressing… now even primary school kids have hps! while i understand the convenience of giving them hps, do they really need one? afterall, many generations of pri sch kids have survived without it…
but guess there’s nothing much we can do other than making sure it doesn’t happen to our kids or let known our views (like what you are doing on your blog =))
Well said
I used to do that too, go into mom’s wardrobe and shoe cabinet and put everything on just to pretend I was a grown up lady. But we were never allowed to have sexy clothes, even till now! LOL I guess that’s what you get when you have people like Britney Spears, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen and Miley Cyrus as role models in the entertainment industry. I’m all for dressing our kids up, but age-appropriately please.
0__0 ive always been disgusted/creeped out by these beauty contests for kids. I’m not one to tell others how to be proper parents as I am not even one yet, but seriously, it’s sick and I honestly am baffled as to what goes through the minds of the parents who send their kids for this.
I used to get annoyed when my mom dressed me up in frilly fluffy strawberry shortcake-esque baby doll dresses, with a hat to top it all off. but now I’m an adult I sure as hell appretiate it! There should be a campaign of sorts to stop all this nonsense pagaents!
totally agree with you rozz! esp on the kiddy talent show on channel 8! HAHAHA
Outrageous! Just outrageous! Noah Cyrus launching a kids’ lingerie line is just wrong on so many levels! Kids’ lingerie? The heck!? They don’t even got boobies! The world is really coming to an end. And for the record, the Cyrus family is so screwed (the kids at least).
couldn’t agree with you more
Such a coincidence that you’d blog about this topic. My friend and I were just ranting about this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOjL5S5J3xQ&feature=player_embedded) youtube video of 8 year olds dancing/waacking the other day. I mean the girls are really good, but it’s still really scary!
OMG!! me and my boyfren were discussing on a topic lyk diz, young girls n make-up n stuff. HE DIDNT UNDERSTAND WAD DE BIG DEAL WAS. n he said i was over-reacting. URGH. it turned into quite a heated arguement. owells. guys are insensitive to some stuff i guess.
nice Blog ross! anyway the ahma in girl shirt is disgusting… and yeah those small girls shouldnt be so exposed… nice blog and posts, keep up the good work
couldn’t agree more. kids should have that fun, not to mention, EMBARRASSING memories to look back on when they’re older. that’s what childhoods are for, seriously!
This appalling trend is not only attributed to parents’ inculcation alone, but the culture among the schoolkids themselves (and one may say this culture was the very result of the actions of those unthinking parents).
I think these kids are pressured by peers around them to behave more ‘mature’ than they are actually required for their age – dressing like an adult when they are either in their preteen years or early teens is just one of the many prevalent example.
I remember walking the streets of Orchard and I will often run into young teen girls dressed up as if they’re some sex icon. What are they trying to prove? An invitation to treat? Or?
u know, i was watching a Noah Cyrus vid yesterday (totally forgot how I stumbled on it), and thought it was WAY ridiculous how the event organizers had installed poles for the little girls to dance to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pOBomhZgrs
I remember back when i was a kid, my mum would dress me up in similarly ridiculously fancy dresses and hair accessories, and of course, I felt remotely like a princess (but I was mostly irritated by all her fussing about me and scratchy material of the dresses). I also remembered I was too young at that time to really care how I look like or how I’m perceived by adults (i passively left it all up to my mum to doll me up). I agree that it’s the parents’ responsibility to make kids look AND behave like kids and not drag queens or trashy strippers. Kids are very impressionable and easily conditioned from young. Parents have to set boundaries for them and be firm about it.
oh yeah, now I remember. I was looking for vids of swing dancing or swing dance kind of music, and Noah Cyrus’s video was one of the few which got tagged on Youtube for that genre -_- gets on my nerves when the internet throws you things which you weren’t searching for huh.
once again i agree completely!!! i hated those kid singing / beauty contest! esp sats nights, thats all mediacorp used to air!
kids trying to be adults , old ladies trying to be young, totally get you . just look at my relative. 50 yrs old aunty.. she has more bright colored jeans than me! from bright yellow to green to purple. i dont even dare to wear it out (i stick to the basics) the world is sicka and you are right.
Honestly and saddly, this is how ugly or disgusting our world has turned into. Fine with us if we have to accept lady gaga’s outrageous outfits, I mean she’s already old and in fact I do think she is an artistic artiste. But for kids who dresses or even old granny’s who tries to take on a age they are not. It turns me off, and I do believe it turns this society off. For once I was hoping I was trying not to be full of myself and try to accept their their way of dressing, but seeing young singaporeans dress in cosplay outfits or those sort in this hot weather of our’s. Freaks me out, well cause I thought they should be dressed as who they claim their character to be in events. No offence here. I just feel that kids just have to learn and indulge in being kids, and yes adults just have to embrace their golden age.
And if you really do think it’s just fun and lighten up? Just think of how it would feel if your kids insist on behaving like a 16 year old when she’s only 6. And to have a sister who’s 66 and think she’s 22. Not cool aye? (:
i totally agree. Not too long ago I saw this video..
its of this little girl dancing & singing to lady gaga’s Bad Romance. She even know’s some of the moves from the video, which is worrying..
OMFG. i dunno which is worse.. her ghastly makeup…. or the gyrating body…. i dont blame lady gaga. i blame this girl’s parents for allowing this. and the judges of this crap contest for encouraging it. urrrgh.
HELLO ROZZ! Saw you last night at scape! Was there watch SDD too! Was dying to say hello to you but I couldn’t. I think you’re way awesome. Keep rocking! (:
OMG. i could smack you silly girl. WHY DIDNT YOU SAY HELLO??!!
do i really look that scary
((
No you don’t!! I WANTED TOO!! OMG I loved your outfit and your cap!
Hope we will meet again! I promise I will say Hi!! SORRY. STARSTRUCK RIGHT!!!!!
Totally agree. When I ‘ll be a mum, I will never ever ever allow my child to dress up like this. It’s just sad and moreover damn sick!
But the problem is that, at least when it comes to dressing like this (I won’t mention those mothers and fathers who, apart from dressing their kids up like this, make them also participate in those contets… just… arghhh!), many kids WANT to look like this. Not because they like it, but because “Hannah Montana/ Ashel Tisdale/ whoever” dresses like this or because “the other girls in class wear those things too!”… Our world has become one dangerous place for children. And it should be a safe haven… Sigh… As long as they don’t know what they are actually doing, all those wannabe stars that kids adore so much should not be presented in such a way in gthe media. Because lets face it, when a kid seems something an TV, it will be rather difficult for a parent to explain that this kind of behaviour is BAD and be believed…
I have a conspiracy theory that paedophiles were the ones who started the trend for little girls to dress sexy, and were the ones behind the fanfare that led to the contests.
It’s a sick, sick world we live in, to the extent that people think it’s now normal culture for this sort of thing to happen…
Completely agree with you!! Girls are growing up way too fast for their own good!
I think there’s a reality show in the US, where the cameras follow little girls as young as 3 years of age, are signed up for beauty pageants! And it’s completely sick cos their mums are the ones training them, choreographing their dance moves and getting them to go for manicures, spray tanning (!!) and makeovers.
It’s like leaving the door wide open for pae.dophiles!
Glad u put this on ur blog gurl! You rock! =)
I found myself nodding my head as I read your article because I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU! I see some of the “child-friendly” games on PS3, Nintendo Wii and I shake my head. They get to choose hair style, make-up, high heels, type of shoes, stockings, etc. Whatever happened to good ol’ childhood games?
I cannot stand watching those variety shows like the one you talked about. The kind where young girls dress up with full-on make-up and teased hair, pracing about on stage to some adult song about s*x. Makes me sick and sad at the same time….
Reminds me of when I was younger.. I used to wear my mothers hush puppy heels and parade all around the house and sometimes would steal her make up and end up looking like a clown!! Haha:) ahhh kids..
actually i’m not gonna lie, i thought the first video was alright. looked more like belly dancing. thought that was kinda cute.
tho last month when i was working for a corporate event, there was this twelve year old chick on stage who dressed so sluttily all of us felt like pedophiles. singing some dance tune in a sexy black dress, hip thrusts, winking at the uncles – the whole shebang. i just wanted to vomit my guts out…
i didnt mind the belly dancing.. but whats with the stripping at the end of the dance??!!! it wasnt necessary at all
lol i didn’t even watch that far. now that you mention it it seems a little disconcerting.
there’s a show called toddlers and tiaras that focuses on this in the us, here’s a article: http://evilbeetgossip.film.com/2009/02/11/is-anyone-else-watching-toddlers-tiaras/ it’s disgusting, simply disgusting. not saying all kids beauty pageants are terrible, but this shows the extreme side. let kids be kids, honestly.
ps: it’s me, kera, i don’t know why i signed off with d (for dawn) instead… lol. haven’t seen you in a while, hope all’s well with you! xo

to be honest, clothes for young kids are always a reflection of what us adults wear. i can’t say i’m surprised at what kids clothes have turned into, but you can’t expect women to think it’s okay to go out in ass baring skirts and boob flashing tops and ask them to make sure their kids are covered up.
you know the old saying the sins of the father are the sins of the sons? in this case it’s the mothers who are leading and the daughters following. i hope parents realise that kids are meant to be kids and to let them live out their childhood without having to resort of padded bikinis or telephone sex operator clothes
nice call on that dress. no pun intended. (:
rozz, if you think what you found was bad, this is just morally wrong. these little girls wear hair pieces and FAKE FRONT TEETH to these pageants. some of them are just babies!
there’s just no time to grow up!!
Sometimes there seem to be no difference in clothing lines for adults and kids (yes, teens are kids too).
It is like they only have two range, toddlers or pre-school and then anything goes.
Mums look like kids, kids look like Mums.
I know that I digress but the media/slimming centers/salons and health products are trying to squeeze everyone (female) into one size/age type.
Luckily for men, we look the same when we are boys till we are men. Shorts, t-shirts, singlets …same same all the way.
This is beyond preteen, this is pre-tween. Maybe it’s got to do with evil Bratz dolls. Saw this tweenie cosplayer in black eyeliner and wearing a teenie pink tilted hat. I bet she listens to Tokio hotel.
hey omg. the girls in the second video are actually quite good. wth? their standards are there! high sch dancers arent even that good omg?
